Founded twenty years ago to protect and support teen girls who have survived sexual abuse and trauma, Emerge Lanka provides safe spaces, art, education, and psychosocial care that centers dignity, trust, and the agency of survivors themselves.
Sri Lanka - Colombo
Sri Lanka has lived with overlapping crises for a generation. The long aftermath of civil war, economic collapse, political instability, and environmental stress has left deep marks on communities across the island. Women and girls have borne the heaviest burden - facing heightened risks of exploitation, sexual violence, and long-term poverty. The systems that should protect them have too often failed them.
In January 2026, The PhotoBridge Project's Co-Founder and photographer Guillaume Binet documented what happens when a community refuses that failure. Across safe houses, classrooms, and quiet moments of everyday life, Binet's images follow the young women Emerge Lanka supports - the slow, unglamorous, determined work of rebuilding confidence, reclaiming futures, and finding solidarity with others who understand what survival costs. The portfolio also includes contextual images of the world that surrounds these young survivors.
The stories revealed here show an organization that has earned profound trust with the communities it serves, and teens who are actively shaping the direction of their own lives. They are a testament to Emerge Lanka's founders, to their staff, and to the particular kind of courage that does not announce itself.
About Emerge Lanka
Emerge Lanka is a Sri Lankan civil society organization with twenty years of experience protecting, educating, and supporting teen girls who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma. Working directly with communities affected by poverty, abuse, and systemic exclusion across Sri Lanka, they offer therapeutic support, formal education, and practical pathways toward long-term independence.
Their approach is trauma-informed and survivor-led. At every stage, those most affected are actively involved in shaping the solutions. Emerge Lanka's vision is young women who move through the world with the confidence, skills, and support networks to determine their own futures - not despite what they have endured, but informed by it.
